Although evidence suggests individuals might endorse stereotypes about their romantic relationships, no tool has addressed self-stigma in this domain. This study aimed to develop and validate the Intimate Relationship Self-Stigma Scale (IRSS), specifically, to determine its structural and construct validity, as well as the internal consistency and test-retest reliability. This instrument was co-constructed with peer support workers living with SMI. Using a bipolar semantic differential format, the IRSS captures both self-stigmatizing beliefs and positive self-perceptions. Items were generated through focus groups and literature review. Participants with SMI (N = 150) completed the IRSS online, along with measures of internalized stigma, self-esteem, and romantic functioning. Exploratory factor analyses supported a four-factor structure-Disclosure Effects, Self-Attractiveness, Stability, and Intimacy Needs-explaining 48.6% of the variance. Subscales demonstrated satisfactory internal consistency (ω = .69-.87), test-retest reliability (ICC = .79-.93), and expected correlations with related constructs. The IRSS fills a critical gap in recovery-oriented mental health care by providing a comprehensive assessment of internalized stigma in romantic contexts while simultaneously capturing positive self-perceptions. Further validation, including confirmatory factor analyses and cross-cultural validity, is warranted.
Référence complète Meryl Caiada, Antoinette Prouteau, Simon Felix, Sarah Guionnet, Justin Lamontagne, Emma Tison, Kevin-Marc Valery, Luc Vigneault, Tania Lecomte (2026). The aim of this study was twofold: firstly, to identify the professional practices and skills that mental health service users consider to be useful, and secondly, to assess the relative importance of these practices and skills in terms of frequency of occurrence. A survey was conducted online with the objective of gathering information from psychiatric service users in France. The content of the survey was developed through a participatory, user-led study approach. A total of 128 users participated in the survey. Ten practices, such as user involvement in decision-making, accurate diagnosis, person-centered support, and clear information about care, were identified as useful. Similarly, ten professional skills, including trust, empathy, honesty, transmission of hope, and belief in the potential for recovery, were also considered beneficial. However, it was observed that few service users reported frequently benefiting from these practices and skills. The results indicate that service users seek professionals who are both experts in providing support and trusted equals who facilitate their empowerment. Implementing these practices and skills in clinical practice could better align with the preferences expressed by service users.
Référence complète Kevin-Marc Valery, Sarah Guionnet, Pauline Boivert, Julien Bonilla-Guerreo, Meryl Caiada, Jean-Marc Destaillats, Simon Felix, Thomas Fournier, Emma Tison, Louis Violeau, Pascal-André Berrier, Antoinette Prouteau (2025). Personal recovery—living a satisfying and meaningful life despite mental health challenges—has gained attention in mental health. The widely-used CHIME framework identifies five recovery processes: Connectedness, Hope, Identity, Meaning, and Empowerment. Full INSPIRE evaluates whether service users feel supported in each CHIME process. However, emerging cross-cultural evidence indicates differences in the priority placed on each CHIME domain. No tool exists to assess recovery priorities, hindering cross-cultural research. The 20-item self-completed Global INSPIRE was adapted from the Full INSPIRE to assess recovery priorities of both service users and non-service users. Participants in the UK (n = 512) and Japan (n = 507) completed the Global INSPIRE at baseline and two-week follow-up. Psychometric properties were evaluated, including reliability, test-retest stability, and discriminant validity with two established recovery scales—CORE-10 and QPR-15. Cross-national differences in recovery priorities were also examined. Both versions showed excellent reliability (α = 0.91 UK; 0.97 Japan), test-retest stability (4/5 processes UK, 5/5 Japan), and acceptable model fit (CFI = 0.80 UK; 0.85 Japan). Measurement invariance supported configural (CFI = 0.89) and metric invariance (CFI = 0.89) but not scalar invariance (CFI = 0.83). Discriminant validity was supported by weak correlations with CORE-10 and QPR-15. UK participants prioritised Hope, Meaning, and Empowerment, while Japanese participants prioritised Identity. Global INSPIRE is a reliable and culturally adaptable tool for assessing distinct recovery priorities. Future research should explore demographic differences and expand testing across diverse cultural contexts. Guided by co-production and adult learning principles, RCs represent a recent mental health innovation. Since the first RC opened in England in 2009, RCs have expanded to 28 countries and territories. However, most RC research has been conducted in Western countries with similar cultural characteristics, limiting understanding of how RCs can be culturally adapted. The 12-item Recovery Colleges Characterisation and Testing (RECOLLECT) Fidelity Measure (RFM) evaluates the operational fidelity of RCs based on 12 components, but cultural influences on these components remain underexplored. To assess associations between Hofstede’s cultural dimensions and RFM items to identify cultural influences on fidelity components. A cross-sectional survey of RC managers was conducted across all 221 RCs. Mixed-effects regression models examined associations between Hofstede’s country-level cultural dimensions and item-level RFM scores, adjusted for healthcare expenditure and income inequality. Four cultural dimensions, obtained from Hofstede, were analysed: individualism (prioritising personal needs), indulgence (enjoyment-oriented), uncertainty avoidance (preference for predictability) and long-term orientation (future-focused). The RFM was completed by 169 (76%) RC managers. Seven RFM items showed associations with cultural dimensions. Equality was linked to short-term orientation, while learning was associated with individualism and uncertainty avoidance. Both individualism and indulgence influenced co-production and community focus. Commitment to recovery was shaped by all four cultural dimensions, with the strongest associations seen for individualism and indulgence. Individualism enhanced explicit focus on strengths-based practice, while uncertainty avoidance influenced course distinctiveness. This study demonstrates how culture shapes RC fidelity components, providing actionable insights for cultural adaptation. Incorporating under-represented dimensions, such as collectivism and restraint, could improve the RFM’s global applicability, facilitating implementation. Future research should explore cultural nuances, engage diverse stakeholders and refine fidelity measures to enhance RC inclusivity and effectiveness worldwide.
Référence complète Yasuhiro Kotera, Amy Ronaldson, Simran Takhi, Simon Felix, Mariam Namasaba, Simon Lawrence, Vanessa Kellermann, Agnieszka Kapka, Daniel Hayes, Danielle Dunnett, Tesnime Jebara, Michio Murakami, Ioannis Bakolis, Julie Repper, Sara Meddings, Vicky Stergiopoulos, Lisa Brophy, Clara De Ruysscher, Lene Eplov, Charlotte Toernes, Dagmar Narusson, Bernd Puschner, Ramona Hiltensperger, Yuki Miyamoto, Stynke Castelein, Trude Gøril Klevan, Hannah Morland-Jones, Edith Moore, Samson Tse, Michael Ryan, Gianfranco Zuaboni, Charlotte Hanlon, Laura Asher, Wouter Vanderplasschen, Susana Ochoa, Jonna Tolonen, Ashleigh Charles, Mário Andrade, Daniel Elton, Peter Bates, Julie Cooper, Jason Grant, Claire Henderson, Mike Slade (2025). The objective of this study was to identify individual beliefs that are correlated with six recovery-oriented practices in schizophrenia among mental health professionals. Seven individual beliefs were examined for their association with each of the aforementioned practices: belief in recovery possibilities, biological beliefs, desire for social distance, perceived similarities, professional utility beliefs, continuum beliefs, and categorical beliefs. The results indicated that belief in the possibility of recovery from schizophrenia and professional efficacy beliefs were the most strongly associated with the six recovery-oriented practices examined. Conversely, there was a negative association between stigma score (desire for social distance) and the six recovery-oriented practices. The remaining four beliefs-biological, perceived similarity, categorical, and continuum-were found to be more weakly associated with recovery-oriented practices. In light of these findings, it is evident that mental health professionals’ individual beliefs warrant further consideration in research endeavors aimed at fostering and facilitating the implementation of recovery-oriented practices.
Référence complète Kevin-Marc Valery, Simon Felix, Meryl Caiada, Thomas Fournier, Sarah Guionnet, Adrien Seguela, Emma Tison, Louis Violeau, Antoinette Prouteau (2025). Despite ongoing effort of international organizations to combat mental illness stigma, there remain a limited understanding of specific IR-related stereotypes. The study aimed to i) identify the stereotypes related to IR of persons with schizophrenia held by Mental Health Professionals (MHP), health students and the general population, and ii) explore the effects of several factors associated with these stereotypes. This study used a mixed-methods approach. A survey developed collaboratively with persons with lived experience of mental health conditions (PWLE) was disseminated among MHP, health students and the general population. The majority of the nine IR-related stereotypes previously identified by PWLE were endorsed by the participants (N = 532). PWLE were perceived as particularly incompetent in the domain of IR (e.g. to achieve couple project). Stereotypes endorsement varied among the groups. Continuum beliefs, perceived similarities and recovery beliefs were negatively associated with stereotype endorsement. The general population, MHP and health students endorsed several stereotypes regarding IR of persons with schizophrenia. The results provide support for the role of theoretical beliefs in IR stigmatization, suggesting they may be relevant targets for evidence-based stigma reduction programs.
Référence complète Meryl Caiada, Kevin-Marc Valery, Simon Felix, Sarah Guionnet, Emma Tison, Maxime Gonin, Julien Bonilla-Guerrero, Jean-Marc Destaillats, Nicolas Pillaud, Antoinette Prouteau (2025). However, there is relatively little empirical research on this point. The objective of this study was to operationalize empathy in the evaluator/evaluatee relationship during neuropsychological assessment. The subsequent aim was to determine the impact of this empathy on the evaluator/evaluatee relationship and cognitive performance. The participants, designated as “evaluatees”, were randomly assigned to complete a brief neuropsychological test in either an empathic (N = 47) or neutral condition (N = 47). The neuropsychological tests included the Stroop task from the GREFEX battery, the Letter-Number Sequencing from the WAIS-IV, and the d2 test of attention. Following the tests, participants completed scales indicating perceived relationship with the evaluator, lived experience of the test, and sociodemographic information. The manipulation check indicated that it was possible to manipulate empathy. Evaluators demonstrating empathy led to a better evaluator/evaluatee relationship. However, the results regarding cognitive performance were less consistent. In conclusion, there is a need for improvement in clinical neuropsychological practice with regard to relational competencies during testing. This study proposes benchmarks to make the evaluator’s empathy perceptible. This technique has not been shown to have a consistent effect on cognitive performance.
Référence complète Kevin-Marc Valery, Adrien Seguela, Meryl Caiada, Justine Dubos, Alexia Ducasse, Justine Duffa, Chloé Dumora, Simon Felix, Thomas Fournier, Mathilde Guillet, Sarah Guionnet, Manon Laumier, Emma Tison, Louis Violeau, Maika Violet, Antoinette Prouteau (2024). Validated self-report outcome measures (PROMs) are needed to facilitate the transformation towards recovery-oriented practices and services. Objectives were to identify published measures and analyze their measurement properties using a standardized methodology. Following the COSMIN guidelines, we conducted a systematic review of personal recovery PROMs in serious mental illness. The MEDLINE, PMC, PsycINFO, PsycARTICLES, PBSC and Scopus electronic databases were searched for articles published between May 2012 and February 2024. Full-text articles from a previous systematic review were also examined. 91 studies were included in the review, describing 25 PROMs. Ten of them had not been identified in previous reviews. Quality of evidence was globally poor for most PROM measurement properties. Very little evidence was found for cross-cultural validity, measurement invariance, measurement error and criterion validity. The Recovery Assessment Scale and Questionnaire about the Process of Recovery showed the strongest evidence for sufficient psychometric data on a wide range of measurement properties. Several personal recovery measures are now available. While research is still needed to enhance their validity on some psychometric properties, the current tools appear sufficient to cover most research and clinical needs.
Référence complète Simon Felix, Kevin-Marc Valery, Meryl Caiada, Sarah Guionnet, Julien Bonilla-Guerrero, Jean-Marc Destaillats, Antoinette Prouteau (2024). Thus, a valid instrument to assess personal recovery is needed. The present study aimed to validate the French translation of the 22-item Questionnaire about the Process of Recovery (QPR-Fr). A convenience sample of 222 participants reporting a severe mental illness diagnosis was recruited online. Psychometric properties of the QPR-Fr were evaluated. A confirmatory factor analysis was conducted for structural validity. Internal consistency and test-retest reliability were assessed. To test for convergent validity, we conducted multiple linear regression analysis to explore the QPR-Fr associations with psychological distress and the CHIME framework (with Connectedness, Hope and optimism about the future, Identity, Meaning in life, and Empowerment) proxy measures (perceived social support, hope, self-esteem, quality of life, and empowerment). An adequate fit was found for a 19-item unidimensional factor structure. Internal consistency was excellent. Test reliability was good. The QPR-Fr total score was significantly positively associated with quality of life, hope, self-esteem, and social support satisfaction and negatively associated with psychological distress. No significant association was found with social support availability nor with empowerment. This study provides additional data to support the cross-cultural validity of the Questionnaire about the Process of Recovery. The QPR-Fr is a valid and reliable tool to assess personal recovery. Practitioners could use the QPR-Fr to assess personal recovery in collaboration with people with lived experience. Convergent validity with CHIME proxy measures supports the validity of the CHIME framework in a French cultural context.
Valery, M. Roulin, M. Caiada, S. Felix, S. Guionnet, E. Tison, T. Fournier, L. Violeau, L. However, these unmet needs have received little attention until recently. This study reviews interventions that aim to facilitate the development and the maintenance of intimate relationships (IR) of persons with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and major depression. A systematic review following PRISMA guidelines was conducted. Studies published in Scopus, PubMed, EBSCO (Psych INFO, Psych ARTICLES, Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection) from January 1, 2000, to December, 2021, were screened. The search using terms referring to “schizophrenia”, “bipolar disorder”, “major depression”, “IR” and “interventions” revealed 11 studies. Among them, 10 reported interventions for persons with depression, including 9 for couple therapy. Most interventions targeted satisfaction with couple relationships as the main therapeutic objective. Heterogeneity in study design precludes any firm conclusions about their efficacy. Interestingly, only one intervention focused on single persons interested in developing IR. The results highlight the lack of interventions: (i) aimed at promoting IR, (ii) designed for single persons, and (iii) targeting persons with psychotic disorders. This result may reflect the persisting stigmatization of persons with psychotic disorders, and the taboo associated with the IR and sexuality of persons with mental illness. Further studies are needed to develop inclusive interventions promoting the development of IR in persons with mental illness.
Référence complète Meryl Caiada, Simon Felix, Sarah Guionnet, Kevin-Marc Valery, Julien Bonilla-Guerrero, Jean-Marc Destaillats, Antoinette Prouteau (2024). This study investigated the effects of VR modality level of immersion, locomotion interface, and proprioception on spatial learning and physiological measures using eye-tracking (ET) in VR. We translated the classic T-maze task from Barnes et al. (Can J Psychol 34:29-39, 1980. https://doi.org/10.1037/h0081022) to humans for the first time, comparing three VR modalities: 3D HMD VR with physical walking, 3D HMD VR with controller-based movement, and 2D desktop VR. Eighty-eight participants were recruited, and recruitment was stopped once 75 valid participants were obtained (25 per experimental condition) in the powered sample, as preregistered. Results of generalized mixed linear models with binomial distribution to assess learning outcomes revealed that human participants employed a mixture of cue, place, and response strategies when navigating the virtual T-maze, mirroring rodent behavior. In both samples, mixed linear models showed no significant differences between the two HMD VR conditions in learning performance, nor consistent ones in strategy choices. However, 2D desktop navigation was associated with slower initial learning, though this discrepancy diminished in subsequent sessions. These results were supported by spatial presence, immersion, and naturalness reports. Gaze measures showed that participants who physically walked devoted more visual attention to environmental cues compared to controller users. Predictive models for identifying spatial learning strategies based on ET and behavioral measures demonstrated significant accuracy in permutation tests in some models, particularly in the VR walking condition and second session. Our findings enhance the understanding of spatial learning strategies and the effects of VR modality on cognition and gaze behavior. This work demonstrates the potential of integrated ET data and holds implications for early detection and personalized rehabilitation of neurodegenerative conditions related to spatial cognition.
